Jorge Gutierrez: The Story Behind the Player
Jorge Gutierrez was born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, a border state more infamously known for its violent cartels and sweatshops. But Chihuahua meant something much different to Gutierrez: It’s where he discovered basketball. “Most people think that soccer is the dominant sport in Mexico,” he says, “but in Chihuahua, it's basketball first.”
Gutierrez is now a starting point guard for UC Berkeley's basketball team. A natural leader and fan favorite, he was named Pac-12 conference player of the year last Monday. But it’s who Gutierrez is off the court that brings his story to life. “I don’t ever regret what I did,” he says. “I don't know what would have happened if I would have stayed down in Mexico.”
